Overview
The Horn Shark, Heterodontus francisci, is a shark with pointy teeth at the front of their jaws that they use for clutching prey, and rounded molar-like teeth in back for grinding hard-shelled invertebrates (crustaceans, sea urchins, small fishes, mollusks). The horn in their name refers to the spines in front of each dorsal fin. Their bodies are tan with black spots, and they have a yellowish underbelly.
In nature, Horn Sharks hide during the day in crevices or rocks that are similar in color to them, and hunt at night. They can be found on the sea floor and use their strong pectoral fins to crawl along rocks. They can grow to 4 feet long, with females slightly shorter.
The Horn Shark is an aggressive carnivore that needs to live in a tank size of 500 gallons or more. LiveAquaria® has classified this shark as one that requires the knowledge of an expert caregiver.
