When selecting specimens for your freshwater aquarium, many times people look for highly colored fish. But equally interesting and inviting could be the absence of color, allowing you to see into the fish, as is the case with the Albino Silver Hatchet. This freshwater fish presents itself in silver and white and is a small fish, only growing to 2” when fully mature.

Hatchet fish are among the more uniquely shaped species of fish, with their slender bodies, deep bellies and pectoral fins that are set high on the body. They have upturned mouths characteristic of true surface dwellers.

Albino Silver Hatchets (Gasteropelecus sternicla) prefer a planted aquarium with a few floating plants and a freshwater tank that holds at least 20 gallons of water. Excellent water quality must be maintained to keep this fish at optimal health (see Quick Stats above). For this reason, aquarists must be diligent in maintaining the specified water conditions. A hood on the aquarium is necessary, as this fish likes to jump. Hatchets are schooling fish, so consider adding them in groups of 5 or 6.

Unfortunately, the Silver Hatchet's breeding habits have not been documented.

A carnivore, the Silver Hatchet will eat floating foods such as freeze dried bloodworms and tubifex, high quality flake food, mosquito larvae, small flies, and some other meaty live or frozen foods.
