Overview
The Yellow Sea Cucumber requires live rock to provide the nutrients it needs to sustain its health. It will usually find a location with moderate to strong current. It is a filter-feeding cucumber and similar in nature to the Sea Apple.
If a small group is kept, spawning in the home aquarium is possible. They may also reproduce by dividing into 2 individuals. This may come about due to stress, or may be a sign of good health.
The diet of a Yellow Sea Cucumber should include liquid or dried phyto and zoo plankton. They will also benefit from the substrate being stirred regularly releasing bacteria and detritus into the water. When malnourished, they will shrink in size, and may lose feeding arms. If these signs are noticed, increase the number of feedings, and target the cucumber with the appropriate food.
Like other Sea Cucumbers, Colochirus robustus has the potential to poison an aquarium. The chances of this happening are very rare unless the animal is accidentally sucked into an uncovered pump intake or overflow boxes.
Be sure to acclimate properly and house with appropriate inhabitants. The drip-acclimation method is recommended to minimize exposure to fluctuating water parameters. The Sea Cucumber cannot tolerate high nitrate levels or copper-based medications. Approximate Purchase Size: Small: 1/2" to 1-1/4" Medium: 1-1/4" to 2"
Caution: This species secretes or releases toxins when stressed or injured that may kill fish in the aquarium. LiveAquaria.com cannot accept responsibility for any loss that may occur should this animal poison the aquarium. |

Customer Testimonials
I purchased this species a few weeks ago and it is a colorful addition to my reef tank. The cucumber is housed with a pair of Percula Clowns, two shrimp, two starfish, an anemone, a pair of Mandarin Gobies, an anemone crab, and some corals. The tank has been up for 6 months and is going great. I perform water changes weekly, which is probably why I have had no problems with this cucumber. At first, my banded coral shrimp thought his filter feeding tentacles were food but after a few failed attempts he left him alone. The cucumber moves throughout the tank mainly staying on live rock. Once he finds a good current to sweep he will not move for two or three days. I feed him every other day with phyto plankton and keep the temp at 78°F. I would recommend this species to others due to its colors - you can't miss him! It has been a thrill watching this animal in my reef tank.
