Overview
The Suckermouth Catfish is an ornamental captive-bred color variety of the Common Pleco, Hypostomus plecostomus, a popular bottom-dwelling member of the armor-plated catfish group known as Loricariids.
The Common Pleco originates from the rivers and tributaries of South America and typically dons a mottled body showcasing different shades of brown, tan and yellow coloration with an attractive patterning of darker markings. In contrast to this subtle coloration, the Suckermouth Catfish beams with a vibrant yellow coloration that draws immediate attention, making it a showy addition to any large community aquarium.
An established planted aquarium with hardy, fast-growing plants, high aeration, and water movement make for a healthy environment. Rocks and driftwood provide natural habitat and hiding spaces where the Suckermouth Catfish can take refuge. A minimum aquarium size of 125 gallons will be required to accommodate the mature size of this fish.
The Suckermouth Catifish spawns on smooth rocks and even depressions in the substrate. A very large aquarium with ample rocks and sand of fine gravel is required for this species to spawn.
Feeding the Suckermouth Catfish is not difficult due to the fact that it is not a picky eater. Feeding off the bottom of the aquarium, it gets most of its nutrition from leftover food and algae. If there is not any algae or left over food present, supplement with high quality flake food, sinking carnivore pellets, frozen/thawed bloodworms and brine shrimp as well as plant based foods.
