Crystal Black Shrimp are a less common variety of Caridina sp. and are the result of extensive selective breeding. Because of their white color with black stripes, they are also known as Black Bee Shrimp, and make a bold statement in freshwater aquariums. A dwarf shrimp variety, it grows to a maximum length of one- and-one-half inches.

This peaceful shrimp does well in a freshwater aquarium setup with good filtration and specific water requirements with compatible tankmates or in a species-specific aquarium. For this reason, it is not the best choice for beginners, but instead, a more experienced caretaker. Sensitive to changes in water, it is recommended that smaller, more frequent water changes are conducted, as opposed to larger, more infrequent ones. The aquarium this shrimp lives in should contain plants. Plants provide hiding places (especially when molting), help regulate the pH level in the tank, and generate biofilm that the shrimp eats. In addition, plants add a filtration element, absorbing nitrites, nitrates, and ammonia from the aquarium.

The Crystal Black Shrimp is an omnivorous member of the Atyidae family that thrives on a varied diet. It naturally feeds on biofilm that forms on rocks and plants, but in the aquarium, its diet should be supplemented with high-quality flake or pellet shrimp food.
